Why trains run late, and which journeys are most affected

Fog, maintenance blocks, congestion and single lines: the real reasons behind delays and how to plan around them.

Most delays come from a handful of predictable causes. Knowing them helps you judge whether a train that is late now is likely to recover or fall further behind.

Winter fog in north India

From roughly December to early February, dense fog across the Indo-Gangetic plain forces lower speeds for safety. Trains to and from Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar can run hours late on bad nights, and some are cancelled or rescheduled for the season. If you travel in these months, check the running status before you leave home and look at the delay history on the train page.

Maintenance and engineering blocks

Track renewal, bridge work and electrification need the line cleared for a few hours. Trains are held, regulated or diverted around the block. These are usually announced in advance and show up as a rescheduled start or a diversion alert.

Congestion and precedence

Busy corridors carry passenger and freight trains on the same tracks. Premium trains such as Rajdhani, Vande Bharat and Shatabdi get priority, so slower trains may wait in a loop line to let them pass. A train that is already late loses its path in the timetable and tends to lose more time as it gets stuck behind others.

Single lines and crossings

On single-track sections two trains going in opposite directions can only pass at stations. If one is late, the other waits for it. Delays spread in both directions along the line.

Late incoming rake

Many trains reuse the coaches of an arriving train. If the incoming train is late, the outgoing one may leave late from its very first station even on a clear day.

How to use delay history

Our train pages record how late each train was on recent days, taken from regular live snapshots. A train that is usually on time and is 20 minutes late today will probably recover some of it. A train that is late most days is likely to stay late, so plan your connection or pickup with that margin.
